Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD in Toronto

A structured, evidence-based program to help you process trauma and reclaim your life.

When Trauma Keeps You Stuck

If you are living with the aftermath of trauma, you know how it can feel like you are trapped in a loop. Maybe you are haunted by intrusive memories or nightmares. Perhaps you find yourself avoiding situations, people, or places that remind you of what happened. You might feel numb, angry, or overwhelmed by guilt and shame. And underneath it all, there are beliefs that have taken root:

I’m weak,

The world isn’t safe,

I should have known better,

I can’t trust anyone.

These stuck points, the thoughts and beliefs that keep you trapped, are exactly what we address at Feel Your Way Therapy.

You don’t have to feel this way forever. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is one of the most thoroughly researched treatments for PTSD, and it works by helping you process the trauma you’ve experienced and reshape the beliefs that are keeping you stuck. Through a structured 12-session program, you’ll learn concrete tools to challenge unhelpful thought patterns, process what happened, and rebuild a sense of safety, trust, and hope.

Our goal is simple: to help you reclaim your life from trauma and build the future you deserve.

Our 12-Session CPT Program

PT blends cognitive therapy techniques, structured writing assignments, and guided reflection to help you process trauma at your own pace. It’s one of the most extensively researched and evidence-based treatments for PTSD available today. Over 12 sessions of 50 minutes each (delivered weekly or bi-weekly, depending on your needs), you’ll work with a trained therapist to understand how the trauma has affected you and to challenge the beliefs keeping you stuck.

This program helps you:

  • Understand how trauma has changed your thoughts, emotions, and behaviour

  • Identify and challenge “stuck points”—the beliefs keeping you in distress

  • Rebuild healthier beliefs about yourself, others, and the world

  • Decrease PTSD symptoms: intrusions, avoidance, negative mood, and hyperarousal

  • Regain control, feel safer, more confident, and more connected

What to Expect: Your 12-Session Journey

Each session builds on the last with clear goals and between-session practice. Your therapist will guide you through the material at your pace, making sure you feel supported and safe throughout the process.

Phase 1: Understanding Trauma and Your Stuck Points (Sessions 1-3)

Session 1: Orientation & Psychoeducation

We’ll start by introducing you to CPT and explaining how trauma affects your brain and body. You’ll identify the traumatic event(s) that brought you here and begin writing your Impact Statement - a brief description of how the trauma has affected your life. This gives us a baseline to work from.

Session 2: Identifying Thoughts & Emotions

Building on your Impact Statement, we’l explore the automatic thoughts and emotions connected to the trauma. You’ll learn to notice the patterns and identify the stuck points - the beliefs that keep replaying and keeping you stuck.

Session 3: Challenging Beliefs

Using Socratic questioning, we’ll gently examine your stuck points and look for evidence both for and against these beliefs. You’ll begin to see where your thinking might be distorted by trauma, and practice identifying common thinking errors.

Phase 2: Processing and Restructuring (Sessions 4-6)

Session 4: Alternative (Balanced) Thinking

Now you’ll learn to develop balanced, realistic alternatives to your stuck points. We’ll explore your core beliefs about safety, trust, esteem, and power, and you’ll decide whether you’re ready to write a full trauma narrative.

Session 5: Trauma Narrative & Deep Cognitive Restructuring

If you’re ready, you’ll write a detailed account of the traumatic event(s). This writing helps your brain process the memory in a new way. In session, we’ll read it together and apply cognitive tools to identify and challenge the stuck points embedded in your narrative.

Session 6: Processing Trauma Reactions & Stuck Points

Here, we’ll process difficult emotions like guilt, shame, and anger that often accompany trauma. We’ll revisit your stuck points and strengthen the balanced thoughts you’ve been developing.

Phase 3: Rebuilding Beliefs About Self, Others, and the World (Sessions 7-10)

Session 7: Expanding to Global Belief Themes

We zoom out to look at your big-picture beliefs about safety, trust, competence, power, and self-worth. We’ll compare what you believed before the trauma with what you believe now, and explore how to build more balanced beliefs.

Session 8: Strengthening Balanced Beliefs & Addressing Avoidance

You’ll identify areas where you’ve been avoiding reminders of the trauma, and together we’ll create a gentle, gradual plan to face these triggers. This isn’t about forcing yourself - it’s about reclaiming your life step by step.

Session 9: Working with Trust, Intimacy, and Relationships

Trauma often damages our ability to trust and connect with others. In this session, we’ll explore how the trauma has affected your relationships and work on rebuilding a sense of safety, trust, and forgiveness where it matters most.

Session 10: Self-Esteem, Power & Control

You’ll focus on rebuilding your sense of self-worth, addressing any residual shame, and reconnecting with your power and agency. This is about recognizing your strength and reclaiming your identity beyond the trauma.

Phase 4: Strengthening Gains and Moving Forward (Sessions 11-12)

Session 11: Relapse Prevention & Maintaining Gains

We’ll review everything you’ve learned, identify your personal warning signs, and build a toolkit of strategies you can use anytime you feel symptoms creeping back. The goal is to help you feel confident managing your recovery on your own.

Session 12: Review, Consolidation & Termination

In our final session, we’ll celebrate your progress, review the shifts in your beliefs and symptoms, and strengthen your self-reliance. You’ll leave with a clear sense of how far you’ve come and confidence in your ability to keep moving forward.

Why a Structured Approach to Trauma Therapy?

Many people have tried therapy, hoping it would help them move past their trauma. Sometimes they find partial relief. Sometimes they feel heard, but don’t know how to actually change. And sometimes, the work feels too hard, so they avoid it. This is where structure matters. A structured approach like CPT gives you a clear roadmap. Instead of wandering through your pain, you know exactly what to expect in each session and what work lies ahead. You have accountability, regular practice, and a therapist who is trained in the specific skills you need.

The exercises in CPT - writing, challenging thoughts, reflecting on beliefs - aren’t just talk. They are tools that rewire how your brain processes trauma. Over 12 weeks, these tools become yours. You learn not just to survive trauma, but to move beyond it. And that’;s the promise of CPT.

Is This Program Right for You?

CPT works best for people who are ready to engage actively in their healing. If you’re tired of being stuck, willing to do some deep thinking and writing, and ready to challenge the beliefs that have been holding you back, this program could be transformative for you. Here are some signs it might be a good fit:

  • Adults experiencing PTSD symptoms from one or more traumatic events

  • People who feel stuck in guilt, shame, self-blame, or distorted beliefs about what happened

  • Those ready for a structured, goal-oriented approach to healing

  • People willing to engage in writing, reflection, and between-session practice

  • Those who want tools they can use long after therapy ends

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long is the program?

A: The program runs for 12 sessions (usually weekly), but can be adapted to your pace.

Q: Can I do this online?

A: Yes. We offer both in-person therapy in Toronto and online sessions across Ontario.

Q: What if I miss a session?

We can reschedule or adapt the program timeline so you don’t miss important content.

Q: How long will it take for me to find relief?

Thankfully there are many different approaches that can help reduce anxiety’s intensity. Some of them take only a few minutes to learn and implement. They can be helpful to find rapid relief.

Q: What if the trauma narrative feels too overwhelming?

Your safety and comfort come first. Writing the trauma narrative is a powerful part of CPT, but it’s not mandatory for everyone. Some variants of CPT can be done without it, or you and your therapist can decide together to do a shortened version. We always work at your pace.

Q: Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to start?

Not necessarily. A formal PTSD diagnosis isn’;t required to benefit from CPT. If you’re experiencing symptoms related to trauma: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative beliefs about yourself or the world, this program can help.

Q: What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t work?

CPT is different. It’s structured, highly specific, and focused on the exact beliefs and thought patterns that are keeping you stuck. If you’ve felt like previous therapy wasn’;t moving the needle, a structured, evidence-based approach might be exactly what you need.

You Don’t Have to Stay Stuck in Trauma

Healing is possible. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through life, avoiding reminders of what happened, or living with the belief that you’re broken or weak.
