Online Therapy in Hamilton

Hamilton has a real shortage of therapists taking new clients, and online therapy is the fastest way around it. Feel Your Way Therapy is a group practice of about 18 registered therapists based in Toronto, working online with clients across Ontario, including Westdale, Dundas, Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Waterdown, the Durand and Corktown neighbourhoods, the North End, and up on the Mountain.

We do not have a Hamilton office and we are not going to imply otherwise. What we have is availability, a wide enough team that you get matched properly instead of assigned to whoever answered the phone, and appointments that fit around a working week.

Where Hamilton clients start

What we treat, and how

Online therapy in Hamilton often gets described as generic supportive counselling. Ours is not. Four areas make up a large share of the work our Hamilton clients come for.

Trauma & parts work

EMDR and IFS

EMDR for trauma, including single-incident trauma such as a collision or an assault, and for longer-standing trauma from childhood. EMDR works well over video and has been delivered that way at scale since 2020.

IFS (Internal Family Systems) for the experience of being at war with yourself. The part that wants the relationship and the part that wants out. The part that pushes and the part that shuts down at 4pm. IFS gives you a way to work with all of it rather than picking a side.

Behaviour & direction

ACT and anger work

ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) when the goal is not to argue with your thoughts but to stop letting them run the schedule. ACT tends to suit people who have already done CBT, understood the logic, and found that understanding it did not change much.

Anger work, which people rarely book under that name. It usually arrives as “I snapped at my kid again” or “my partner said it was the last time.” Anger is generally the visible end of something else, and treating it as a discipline problem does not work. Treating what is underneath it does.

Couples work in EFT and CBT for anxiety, panic and depression make up most of the rest.

Why us

Why Hamilton residents book online with us

01

No waitlist

Our seven rooms in Toronto fill up; the online schedule does not have a ceiling. Most people start within a week. If you have been on a list at a Hamilton clinic since spring, or you called around Dundas and Ancaster and got quoted two months, that is the reason people find this page.

02

Evenings and weekends

Much of our schedule sits outside 9 to 5 on purpose, because most clients work full time and some work shifts.

03

Eighteen therapists means a real match

Fit with your therapist predicts outcome better than the modality does. We match on the clinical work, on gender and age, and on style, including whether you want someone who will sit with you or someone who will push. If the match is wrong, say so in session two and we will move you.

04

Direct billing, sliding scale, and coverage most people miss

We direct bill several major insurers. We also see clients under the Interim Federal Health Program and NIHB, which matters in Hamilton specifically, since the city resettles a significant number of government-assisted refugees each year and IFHP coverage for mental health is routinely underused. A limited number of sliding scale spots start at $50 per session.

Language

Therapy in eight languages beyond English: Portuguese, Farsi, Russian, Ukrainian, Hindi, Urdu, German and French. Hamilton’s Portuguese-speaking community, concentrated through the north and west of the lower city, is the one most relevant here.

We do not currently have Arabic, Italian, Serbian or Croatian speaking therapists, which are the other languages we get asked for locally.

Logistics

The trip to Toronto is not the answer

Some Hamilton residents do commute to a Toronto therapist. It is worth being clear about what that costs.

By car

60 to 75 minutes when the QEW behaves

Driving from the lower city to Spadina and College is about 60 to 75 minutes when the QEW behaves. On a weekday evening, with the Skyway and the stretch through Burlington and Oakville at a crawl, it is 90 minutes to two hours each way.

By transit

An hour to Union, then the subway

GO Lakeshore West from West Harbour, Hamilton GO Centre or Confederation reaches Union in roughly an hour, then you still need the subway north and a walk, and you are working around the train’s schedule rather than yours.

That makes a 50-minute session a four-hour commitment. Nobody sustains that through a Hamilton winter. The pattern is predictable: a strong start, one missed session to weather, one to traffic, and no session six.

The other half of the problem is local. Hamilton does not have enough therapists for the people who want one, waits at the publicly funded services run months, and private practices in Westdale and on Locke Street tend to be booked.

Online is the practical answer to both.

The other option

If you want to come to the office

Our office is at 455 Spadina Avenue, Spadina and College, seven rooms, near Queen’s Park station. You are welcome there, and a small number of Hamilton clients do come occasionally, usually for a first session to get the relationship started or for couples work where sharing one laptop camera at home is not workable.

Weekly in-person from Hamilton is not something we would recommend or expect, and we would rather say that than sell you a hybrid arrangement you will abandon in a month.

Getting started

Getting started

1

Book a free 15-minute consultation

We ask what is bringing you in, what you have tried, what helped and what did not, and what your week can hold.

2

We recommend a specific therapist

Then we recommend a specific therapist and tell you why that person.

3

Booking, receipts and billing

Booking is direct through our system, receipts are automatic, and direct billing is set up before your first session.

No referral is needed

Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP, so what matters is your extended health plan.

Frequently asked questions

Questions Hamilton clients ask

For most of what people come in with, including depression, anxiety, panic and trauma, research on video-delivered therapy shows outcomes broadly comparable to in-person work. That holds for structured approaches like CBT and ACT, and EMDR has a substantial body of online delivery behind it now as well. The honest exceptions: online is difficult without a private space at home, unreliable if your internet is, and not the right level of care if you are in acute crisis. We will tell you on the consult call if we think that applies to you.
Nearly always, and at the same rate as in-person. Ontario extended health plans reimburse based on the practitioner’s designation rather than the format of the session. Check that your plan names “Registered Psychotherapist” specifically, since some older plans list only psychologists or social workers, and check your annual maximum. Bring the wording to the consult and we will read it with you.
No. Our only office is 455 Spadina Avenue in downtown Toronto, and every Hamilton client we work with is seen online. We are not going to list a Hamilton address we do not occupy, which is worth knowing when you are comparing clinics that do.
