The short answer

Does Sun Life cover Registered Psychotherapists?

Most Sun Life plans that include Extended Health Care benefits cover Registered Psychotherapists, alongside psychologists and social workers. That said, coverage details differ from plan to plan, so it's worth confirming exactly what's included in yours before you book.

The only way to know for sure is to check your own plan. A few minutes now saves any surprises later — here's exactly where to look.

Some plans list a Registered Psychotherapist by name; others fold psychotherapy into a broader line like Counselling Services or Mental Health Practitioner. If the wording is unclear, a quick call clears it up.

Where to check

How to confirm your own plan

  • Sign in to mySunLife.ca or the Sun Life mobile app, and open your benefits summary.
  • Look under “Mental Health Services” or “Extended Health Care” for a line for “Psychotherapist” — some plans fold it into “Counselling Services” or “Mental Health Practitioner.”
  • Check your plan booklet, usually posted on your employer's HR portal, for the exact wording.
  • Still unclear? Call the number on the back of your Sun Life card and ask directly whether your plan covers a Registered Psychotherapist.
How it works

How direct billing with us works

Direct billing — where we bill Sun Life on your behalf, so you're not paying the full fee upfront — is available for sessions with every Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and RP(Q) on our team.

For sessions that are direct-billed, here's what happens

1

You add your Sun Life details at intake

When you register with us, you'll be invited to add your Sun Life member ID and policy number as part of your intake and consent form.

2

We submit the claim after each session

We submit directly through Sun Life's provider system, which typically responds within a short time so you'll know what's covered.

3

Sun Life pays their portion to us

You're billed only for whatever balance is left, if any.

4

If a claim is declined, we tell you right away

Or if you've reached your annual maximum — so you can decide how you'd like to proceed.

A common wrinkle

What if my plan only covers psychologists?

Some Sun Life plans — often older ones, or specific union and association plans — still list “Psychologist” as the only eligible mental health provider, with no separate line for psychotherapists. If that's what your plan shows:

1

Look closely at the wording first

Plans sometimes use broader terms like “Counselling Services” or “Mental Health Practitioner” that include RPs even without naming psychotherapists specifically.

2

Ask your HR department, or Sun Life directly

Ask whether an exception is possible. Because RP fees are often lower than a psychologist's, some plans will accommodate this on request.

3

Check for an EFAP

See whether your employer offers an Employee and Family Assistance Program. It's usually a separate benefit from your extended health plan and often includes a set number of free sessions regardless of practitioner type.

4

Private-pay is always an option

If none of that applies, we're still glad to see you as a private-pay client. We'll give you a receipt in case your plan changes later, or in case you want to submit it to Sun Life yourself and see what happens.

Good to know

Typical annual maximums

Every Sun Life plan sets its own maximum, and the range is wide — anywhere from a few hundred dollars a year up to several thousand, depending entirely on what the employer chose when setting up the plan.

Some plans give psychotherapy its own dedicated maximum. Others pool it together with psychologists, social workers, and other counsellors under one shared “mental health” or “paramedical” limit — which means the number in your booklet may not be exclusively yours to spend on psychotherapy.

Check the schedule of benefits in your own plan documents for the figure that actually applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

Sun Life coverage, answered

Usually not. Most Sun Life plans don't require a physician referral for psychotherapy claims, though a small number do. Check your plan booklet or call Sun Life if you're not sure.
Possibly. It depends on your plan's coinsurance percentage and how much of your annual maximum you have left. Once we've checked your coverage, we'll tell you what your out-of-pocket cost looks like for that session.
This varies a lot by plan. Some cover couples sessions under the same psychotherapy benefit; others don't cover them at all. It's worth confirming directly with Sun Life before booking couples work specifically.
We let you know as soon as we hear back, along with the reason given. From there, we can help you figure out whether to appeal with Sun Life, submit it differently, or handle payment directly while you sort it out.
