Therapy Covered by Manulife: Direct Billing in Toronto & Ontario

Feel Your Way Therapy is a team of Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) seeing clients in person in Toronto and virtually across Ontario.

If you have Manulife benefits, here's what typically applies, how our direct billing works, and exactly where to check your own plan before you book.

The short answer

Does Manulife cover Registered Psychotherapists?

Manulife's own group benefits materials list Registered Psychotherapists as an eligible practitioner type for electronic claims — alongside psychologists, social workers, and clinical counsellors — as long as the practitioner is regulated in the province where care is provided.

In Ontario, RPs are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Our team includes both fully Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying), who practise under supervision while completing their registration requirements — both are usually covered under Manulife plans that include psychotherapy benefits.

Whether your specific plan includes it, and at what amount, comes down entirely to what your employer chose when the plan was set up. Manulife itself is clear that coverage amounts, maximums, and eligible practitioner types vary plan by plan.

Where to check

How to confirm your own plan

  • Sign in to the Manulife member site or app.
  • Go to “My Benefits” or the “Coverage” tab.
  • Look for “Psychotherapist” or “Mental Health Practitioner” under your Extended Health Care coverage.
  • Still unclear? Call the number on the back of your Manulife card and ask directly.
How it works

How direct billing with us works

Direct billing — where we bill Manulife on your behalf, so you're not paying the full fee upfront — is currently available for sessions with three of our most experienced Registered Psychotherapists.

Seeing another therapist on our team?

You'll pay at the time of your session and we'll give you a receipt so you can submit the claim to Manulife yourself.

For sessions that are direct-billed, here's what happens

1

You add your Manulife details at intake

When you register with us, you'll be invited to add your Manulife member ID and policy number as part of your intake and consent form.

2

We submit the claim after each session

We submit the claim to Manulife electronically. Their system responds in real time, so you'll find out on the spot what's covered.

3

Manulife pays their portion to us

You're billed only for whatever balance is left, if any.

4

If a claim is declined, we tell you right away

Or if you've reached your annual maximum — so you can decide how you'd like to proceed.

A common wrinkle

What if my plan only covers psychologists?

Some Manulife plans — particularly older ones, or specific union and association plans — still list “Psychologist” as the only eligible mental health provider, with no separate line for psychotherapists. If that's what your plan shows:

1

Look closely at the wording first

Plans sometimes use broader terms like “Counselling Services” or “Mental Health Practitioner” that already include RPs without naming psychotherapists specifically.

2

Ask your HR department, or Manulife directly

Ask whether an exception is possible. Because RP fees are often lower than a psychologist's, some plans will accommodate this on request.

3

Check for an EFAP

See whether your employer offers an Employee and Family Assistance Program. It's usually a separate benefit from your extended health plan and often includes a set number of free sessions regardless of practitioner type.

4

Private-pay is always an option

If none of that applies, we're still glad to see you as a private-pay client. We'll give you a receipt in case your plan changes later, or in case you want to submit it to Manulife yourself and see what happens.

Good to know

Typical annual maximums

Every Manulife plan sets its own maximum, and the range is wide — anywhere from a few hundred dollars a year up to several thousand, depending entirely on what the employer chose when setting up the plan.

Some plans give psychotherapy its own dedicated maximum. Others pool it together with psychologists, social workers, and other counsellors under one shared “mental health” or “paramedical” limit — which means the number in your booklet may not be exclusively yours to spend on psychotherapy.

Check the schedule of benefits in your own plan documents for the figure that actually applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

Manulife coverage, answered

Usually not. Most Manulife plans don't require a physician referral for psychotherapy claims, though a small number do. Check your plan booklet or call Manulife if you're not sure.
Possibly. It depends on your plan's coinsurance percentage and how much of your annual maximum you have left. Once we've checked your coverage, we'll tell you what your out-of-pocket cost looks like for that session.
This varies a lot by plan. Some cover couples sessions under the same psychotherapy benefit; others don't cover them at all. It's worth confirming directly with Manulife before booking couples work specifically.
We let you know as soon as we hear back, along with the reason given. From there, we can help you figure out whether to appeal with Manulife, submit it differently, or handle payment directly while you sort it out.
